1. Prepare the Chainsaw
Make sure the chainsaw is off and the spark plug wire is disconnected for safety. Wear protective gloves and eyewear.
2. Remove Starter Housing
Loosen and remove the screws securing the starter cover, then lift off the starter housing to expose the rope and pulley.
3. Free the Pulley Spring
Pull the old rope out and slowly rotate the starter pulley counter-clockwise to release tension in the recoil spring.
4. Remove Old Rope
Take the worn or broken rope out of the pulley and handle.
5. Install New Rope
Thread the new starter rope through the hole in the starter housing and into the pulley notch.
Tie a secure knot in the rope end and attach the starter handle.
Wind the rope around the pulley in the correct direction.
6. Tension the Spring
Wind the starter rope around the pulley several turns to build spring tension. Ensure there’s enough tension for proper retraction.
7. Reassemble
Reattach the starter housing and tighten the screws securely.
8. Test the Rope
Pull the starter rope a few times to confirm it retracts smoothly and engages correctly.
