A chainsaw chain must be properly lubricated at all times to prevent overheating, reduce wear, and minimize kickback risk. While most modern chainsaws feature automatic oilers, the following steps ensure correct setup and reliable operation.
1. Check and fill the chain oil tank
✔️ Steps:
Place the saw on a stable, level surface.
Place it on the side, with the oil cap up.
Remove the oil tank cap.
Fill with Husqvarna bar and chain oil.
Do not use engine oil.
Fill up the tank, typically up to the tank neck.
Securely reinstall the cap.
✔️ Why use bar and chain oil?
It is specially formulated to be tacky, helping it adhere to the chain.
This reduces oil throw-off at high speeds and ensures consistent lubrication.
2. Verify oil flow after starting the saw
After installing the bar and chain:
Start the saw (or insert the battery and run it).
Hold it approximately 20 cm (8 inches) above a light-coloured surface, such as a stump or board.
Run the chain at medium speed for a few seconds.
✔️ Expected result:
A thin line or light spray of oil should appear on the surface, confirming that the oiler is functioning properly.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Never use used engine oil. It is unsafe and can damage the saw.
