The engine is flooded
Indicators of a flooded engine are:
A strong smell of fuel coming from the muffler
Multiple pulls of rope required to start the engine
Black smoke when started
Spark plug will have excessive amounts of fuel if removed
Try this solution
Put the saw on the ground. Hold the throttle in the fully open position and pull the starter handle several times until the saw fires
The chainsaw will cough and splatter for a number of seconds until all the excess fuel is burnt out and the saw can run correctly.
