Skid plates are located on each side of the auger housing and adjust the clearance between the scraper bar and the ground surface. Skid plates and sleds must be straight at all times so the machine will not go off course.
Adjust the skid plates evenly to the proper height for the current surface conditions otherwise the auger and the housing will rub against the ground and get damaged.
For removal of snow in normal conditions, such as a paved driveway or side walk, place skid plates in the highest position (lowest scraper clearance) to give approximately 0.5 cm (1/8") clearance between the scraper bar and the ground.
Use a middle position if the surface to be cleared is uneven. If the machines skid plates make lines on your concrete driveway, it is merely discoloration.
They are designed not to damage smooth surfaces.
If the snow thrower must be operated over gravel surface, use extra caution and be the sure skid plates are adjusted to the lowest position (highest scraper clearance position).
Caution: It is not recommended to operate the snow thrower on gravel or rocky surfaces. Objects such as gravel, rocks or other debris, can easily be picked up and thrown by the impeller, which can cause serious personal injury, property damage or damage to the snow thrower.
